We hiked to Monro Beach on the West Coast (just north of Haast, where we spent a night listening to rain pounding the metal roof of our hostel), trying to spot seals. We didn't see any, but we did encounter swarms of sandflies! We only got a few bites, which seem to rival mosquito bites in their itchiness.
